When we first started four years ago, we just wanted to throw a party to celebrate my return to Stuttgart. It was planned as a special welcome-home party. We quickly decided on the location: my new home.
Then we had to become creative in order to make the party special. Most of us were technophile, so we agreed to do something with our computers. Since none of us was or is a producer or a musician, the computers were ment to play music (mp3). This led to the next question: What kind of music? The answer was or course: Our Music! That is, electronic music, preferrably with breakbeats. However, regardless of style/genre, each piece of music had to have bass and that certain something we call "boom". That is the "-breaks" of hentaibreaks.
During the party, the displays of our computers should be used to show something interesting: movies, cartoons, porn, flames & fire, waves, animations, hypnotic patterns. But it had to be watchable without sound, since we already had the acoustics "in check". So we decided on films for the interest, with subtitles for the ability to follow a dialogue. We were both interested in Japanese animated cartoons called "anime". There are so called "fansubs" of the episodes: fans add subtitles to the original episode so others can follow the (original Japanese) dia- or monologue. To make it even more fun and interesting we chose a subgenre of anime: hentai. hentai also has a naughty ring to it which fitted the naughty breakbeats perfectly. Many people think of hentai as porn, and many people like to watch porn, so we showed muted subtitled hentai films to attract more people. That is the "hentai-" of hentaibreaks.
Reason + Location + Acoustics + Optics + People + X = A Party Everybody remembers. As this is is the fourth hentaibreaks party, you might guess that we had solved the equation; but what is this unknown X?
X is something the guests have to do, wear, or say before they are allowed in. At the first hentaibreaks (O the memories!) our dear guests didn't know of such a chicanery beforehand. The surprise was part of it: everybody had to wear ties! Naturally nobody had a tie on them when they rang the bell, but we could quickly relieve them from their disappointment by offering a selection of the most horrible, ugliest, eye-cancer inducing ties you ever saw. Everyone looked silly (we do have photos somehere); comparing ties was an easy way to start conversations. And all but one person had fun; this one person left early. People still remember hentaibreaks 1 and others wish they "had been there".
Only afterwards we realized the cleansing effect of the chicanery. It's one thing to throw a party, another thing to attract lots of people, and yet another thing to gather only attractive people. Attractive here means willing to party and for that party willing to follow the rules of the game. And this leads smoothly to my next topic: It is not so much about being humiliated or ridicouled by our chicanery, but it is about following rules. Every children's birthday payrt has games, every game has rules, and only when everyone follows the rules, can they all have fun. Those who do not wish to follow the rules are excluded from the game. It is so somple even a child can understand. We applied this principle to parties of (wannabe) grown-ups; only we have different games, with different names, and different rules. And those who cannot or wishnot to follow the rules, those cannot play our party games.
For the second hentaibreaks I explained far & wide the chicanery, and the motivation behind it. I explained it many times, I reasoned with many people, trying to make them understand what (I thought) is really important for a good party: all the people must want to have a good party.
My efforts paid off: hentaibreaks 2 was a tremendous success. We only changed the rules of the game; we still showed hentai films and had the computers play mp3 of different electronic genres, with bass and boom.
And again for hentaibreaks 3 we played a different game. And again the party was a success. All who were there enjoyed it very much. It was so much fun! (Miami? I love MiamiI Miami is so much fun!)
Now, after three years and a lot of history - let us talk about hentaibreaks 4. Because we mention it so often to each other we write is as "hb.4" or "hb4".
As hadez once said: thrice repitition makes tradition. hb4 will honor this tradition and continue to feature (uncensored and subtitled) hentai, (bassy and boomy) breakbeats, and a new and different game. In the past the rules of engagement were simple to follow and didn't require too much effort dress-wise, time-wise, or money-wise.
Also, this year we will have to raise some amount of money to cover our expenses. The expenses are greater this time because we are renting a superb club in the middle of Berlin and we will have gifts and flyers and I make make sushi and! and! and! Somehow we will have to advance the money; it would be great if we didn't make huge losses over this. Let us hasten to add: the party *WILL* take place, no matter how many people come, and no matter how much money is raised.
Anybody will get in, even if they don't have any stamps nor a flyer. Anybody except dickheads, assholes, and all sorts of anti-fun people. So, you don't have to have 10 stamps. But showing 10 stamps at the door will get you in for less! Isn't that nice? You show us you are fun and like to play easy games, and we show our apprecieation by giving you a discount on the entrance fee!
This far we had you go through the history of hentaibreaks, explained the rules of engagement, tried to reason those rules, and asked you to come, hunt, and party with us. Next we want to introduce ourselves.
First, there is "I" who is housetier speaking for himself while writing all this. Second, there are "We" who are hadez and housetier. hadez and housetier also make up the hardercore (I hope some of you get the pun). I have the vision, hadez has the ideas and knows the people, and together we two have the ability to make things happen. Third, there is "You" who is reading this. You might be curious, looking for answers, or already have decided to attend and are looking for arguments to persuade your friends.
Fourth, the performers and crew: DJs and helpers. We already have a lot of performers but so few helpers... The fifth and last group are the guests and are defined mostly negatively: not the hardercore, not a performer, not a member of the crew; a guest is someone of "You" who has completely hunted all the stamps and has seen a little of Berlin and is now eager to party. This sounds more positive doesn't it?
We welcome our guests of the hentaibreaks 4 in Berlin!
